Mistake: Not “Answering” the Job Description





You’ve done a lot of exciting things in your career, so it’s natural for you to want to share them all. Don’t! If your experience doesn’t directly respond to the hiring manager’s questions, you’re wasting everyone’s time.

The Solution: Address the needs of the role.

I know what you’re thinking: “What questions?” I’m talking about the qualifications section of a job description. In writing these, the hiring manager is asking how you meet the needs of the role at hand. Of course, in a cover letter, you won’t be able to answer each and every one of them (that’s what your resume is for). But you may want to pick out a couple of the most crucial ones and respond to them in your cover letter.
