Don’t stop at communicating the salary-increase budget. Let your employees know the department’s and the division’s goals, and which financial metrics will move the company into a better raise-granting position next year. The better informed people are, the less likely they are to stew about the minimal changes in their paychecks—and the more they feel like they can make a difference.
